The Arts program at St Leo the Great is designed to nurture individual expression and creativity. The program focuses on Visual Arts, however also explores the learning areas of Drama, Music and Media Arts. All students participate in weekly Art sessions that help to develop confidence, critical and creative thinking, imagination and promote problem-solving. This teaching may explicitly link to other areas of the curriculum currently being studied by the student, to promote important connections between The Arts and other areas of the curriculum
Visual Arts develops an understanding of the elements and principles of Art. Students create two and three-dimensional artworks in various learning experiences, for example mark making, collage, paint, clay, textiles and construction. Students are encouraged to experiment with different materials and styles, whilst studying various artists and their works. In Media Arts, students create visual representations that communicate, challenge and express ideas using various forms of technology. In Drama, students create meaning as drama makers, performers and audience members as they enjoy and analyse their own and others’ stories. In Music, students use body percussion and various instruments to experiment with the elements of music. They participate in whole group musical games to develop an enjoyment of music.
